Title: ^ (caret/wedge/tô bach) Digital Print

Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, Wales

^ is temporary pillar consisting of 100 selected books from the gallery stores. Ranging from guides on how to paint as a hobby to monographs on modernist masters and reference books on Art History, they span a period of around 70 years.

The ‘^’ symbol has many names and uses. It is called specifically a caret, generally a circumflex, a wedge or informally a tô bach in Welsh. The caret is used in proof-reading to mark something that is missing, the name coming from the Latin caret meaning ‘it lacks’. Currently the gallery is missing art, it is in creative limbo. The wedge refers to the insertion work into the space between floor and ceiling, while a tô bach is a little bridge, which relates to the process of transition the redevelopment of the Art Gallery brings to the life and history of the building.

In making a pillar I wanted to look at how previous knowledge is fashioned into a symbolic support for the building. The column only existed momentarily for this image before collapsing. These old books are likely to be discarded as the gallery celebrates a new phase in its life through the redevelopment.

Contemporary visual arts are in a continuous state of flux, never standing still, as it interprets current society and becomes an expression of our place in time. The words, pictures and opinions in these dusty books have already been incorporated into our thinking and they are now examples of Art history themselves. Soon the gallery will re-open, creating new reference points for thinking and seeing.

Piler dros dro yw ^ sy’n cynnwys 100 o lyfrau a ddewisir o siopau’r oriel. Gan amrywio o arweinlyfrau am sut i baentio fel hobi i fonograffau am feistri moderniaeth a chyfeirlyfrau am hanes celf, maent yn ymestyn dros gyfnod o tua 70 o flynyddoedd.

Mae gan y symbol ‘^’ lawer o enwau a dibenion. Yn benodol, caret yw ei enw; yn gyffredinol, fe’i hadnabyddir fel acen grom, lletem neu, yn anffurfiol, do bach, yn Gymraeg. Defnyddir y caret ym maes prawfddarllen i nodi bod rhywbeth ar goll. Enw Lladin yw caret, sy’n golygu ‘mae diffyg’. Ar hyn o bryd, nid oes dim gwaith celf yn yr oriel, mae hi mewn limbo creadigol. Mae’r lletem yn cyfeirio at y gwaith gosod yn y lle rhwng y llawr a’r nenfwd. Pont fechan yw’r to bach; mae’n cyfeirio at y ffaith bod y broses o ailddatblygu’r oriel gelf yn bont ym mywyd a hanes yr adeilad.

Wrth greu’r piler, roeddwn am ymchwilio i sut addesir gwybodaeth flaenorol i fod yn gymorth symbolaidd i’r adeilad. Roedd y golofn yn bodoli am ychydig iawn o amser ar gyfer y ddelwedd hon cyn cwympo. Mae’r hen lyfrau hyn yn debygol o gael eu taflu wrth i’r oriel ddathlu cyfnod newydd yn ei bywyd drwy’r gwaith ailddatblygu.

Mae’r celfyddydau gweledol cyfoes mewn cyfnod o ansicrwydd parhaus, byth yn sefyll yn yr unman wrth ddehongli cymdeithas heddiw a mynegi ein lle mewn hanes. Mae’r geiriau, y lluniau a’r farn a geir yn y llyfrau llychlyd hyn eisoes wedi sefydlu eu hunain yn ein meddyliau ac maent hwy bellach yn enghreifftiau o hanes celf. Yn fuan, bydd yr oriel yn ailagor, gan greu seiliau newydd ar gyfer meddwl a gweld.

… is a typeface which incorporates the handwriting of people involved in the re-development of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.

For example; the letter ‘x’ is a reproduction of the writing of the lead Architect and ‘ z’ the hand of the Curator. Other letters replicate the hand writing of bricklayers, decorators, gallery technicians, education staff and contractors. The typeface celebrates ‘the sum of the parts’ that make the re-development of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery possible.

The title refers to a pause in writing and the pause in the history of the building while suggests the anticipation of the re-opening. It is designed for use in Welsh and English with lesser used symbol keys assigned to Welsh letters such as Ll, Ff, Ch, Ng. It is intended to be used primarily for communications between departments at the gallery and is intentionally informal.
